March is Women's History Month!

Women In Bio is excited to celebrate Women’s History Month this March by hosting the first annual WIB “North American Conference for Women’s Education and Entrepreneurship." To honor and recognize the contributions that generations of women have made to events in history and to society, WIB's 11 chapters will hold events in cities across North America. These events will include keynote addresses and panel discussions from pioneer women in life sciences, covering topics such as science education for girls, career path choices, cultivating skills to move from bench to business, and breaking the life sciences “ceiling.” Click here for more information.

Southern California Chapter Events

WIB-Southern California Speed Networking Event on January 30, 2014
Bring in the new year by making new connections at the WIB Speed Networking Event! Whether you want to find a mentor, be a mentor, generate new business or just make friends, you can do it all in an intimate setting. This event is limited to 30 attendees so that you can meet everyone and comfortably chat with one another. The event runs from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Knobbe-Martens Law Firm. WIB-Greater Boston 2014 Kick-Off Event
Join WIB-Greater Boston as we kick-off 2014 on January 30, 2014 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.! Mingle with current members and find out about 2014 programming and volunteering opportunities. We are also partnering with Dress for Success for this event, so please bring all of those suits, shoes and other professional attire items that don’t fit, or just don’t agree with you anymore. These items can be used by women who need something to wear for their next job interview. And don’t forget, if your own professional wardrobe is in need of an update, WIB members will soon be receiving vouchers for a 15% discount on professional clothing at Macy’s! RTP Chapter Events

YWIB–RTP Presents… THE CASE OF THE MISSING BUNNY!
OH NO! Fluffy the bunny has disappeared! Who could have done such a thing to this bunny rabbit?? We are looking for crime solving 3rd and 4th grade girls with an interest in science to help us solve this mystery. The girls will watch demonstrations of the basic science behind control experiments that they perform, work in teams to conduct the experiments and identify a series of unknowns, and use the unknowns they identify to solve the mystery. The event concludes with a question & answer session and short talk about how confident one must be in results before identifying the perpetrator of a crime. We will hold two sessions at the Duke University French Family Science Center on February 1, 2014: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EST. This event is currently full. How to dare to be yourself? Innovate and stay standing no matter the outcome! Join us February 24, 2014 for a varied and exciting event at Biogen Idec! Anne Whitaker, President of North America Pharmaceuticals for Sanofi, will give the evening’s keynote speech. Next, we’ll have the opportunity to hear a panel discussion involving several distinguished professionals from the pharmaceutical industry. Join YWIB for a great event at Northwestern University on February 1, 2014!
WIB-Chicago’s YWIB committee will host students from Highland Park High School’s Women In STEM organization for an exciting afternoon of mentorship and hands-on experience with cutting edge research. Students will tour Northwestern’s molecular imaging facility, participate in a laboratory activity, hear research talks from Northwestern students, and learn about the diverse career paths available to women with science degrees. We seek volunteers to participate in the career panel that starts at 3:45 p.m. Come share your story! The event is also open to the first five WIB members who would like to participate with their daughters. WIB-Atlanta Valentine’s Wine and Sweets Tasting on February 11, 2014
Come join Women In Bio Atlanta as we gather for a Valentine’s Day themed wine tasting networking event at the Warren Club in the Virginia-Highlands! This is a great opportunity to make new connections with women in the biotechnology community and catch up with old friends. Leadership Opening in the YWIB-Atlanta Committee
The YWIB-Atlanta committee accomplished much over the past year, and it continues reaching out to young, aspiring biologists, encouraging them to pursue their interests. WIB-Atlanta Reviews Tough Choices: A Memoir by Carly Fiorina
This popular book received mixed reviews from Women in Bio-Atlanta. A small, cozy group enjoyed a catered evening meal at a member’s home on a cold night in January to discuss it. Not everyone had completed Fiorina’s memoir - but most had strong opinions about it!

 

Montréal Chapter Events

Séminaire scientifique et interactif du chapitre de Jeunes Femmes en bio déstiné aux filles inscrites en secondaire 3.

L’inauguration du chapitre Jeunes Femmes en bio aura lieu à l’Université Concordia le 19 février,  2014. Les jeunes filles auront l’occasion de participer au séminaire interactif, mis sur place par la faculté d’Arts et de Sciences de l’Université Concordia. Ce séminaire a pour but de familiariser les étudiantes aux carrières envisageables dans les domaines des sciences de la nature, technologie, génie et mathématiques. Les étudiantes seront incites à explorer des possibilities de carrières dans les domaines des sciences de la nature, technologie, génie et mathématiques.Les étudiantes vont acquérir de l’expérience sur le tas en découvrant la biologie (en manipulant des cellules vivantes), la chimie, et on passe! Ce séminaire s’offre aux étudiantes inscrites en secondaire 3. Ce séminaire s’offre gratuitement, mais une inscription est requise pour y participer. Young Women In Bio Greater Montreal’s Interactive Science Workshop for Ninth Graders 

Join WIB-Greater Montreal at its inaugural YWIB event, at Concordia University on February 19, 2014! Young women have the opportunity to participate in an interactive workshop developed by Concordia University’s Faculty of Arts and Science. The workshop will encourage students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Students will gain “hands-on” experience discovering the worlds of living cells, markers, chemistry, and more! The workshop is open to girls attending ninth grade. WIB-Pittsburgh Scientific Presentation Skills Workshop on February 26, 2014
Nervous about presenting your work to the scientific community? Ever wondered if your audience is fully engaged? Whether you’ve been giving presentations for 20 years or you’re preparing your first one, we can all benefit from an opportunity to develop these critical skills. Please join WIB-Pittsburgh as respected UPMC professor Judy Cameron, Ph.D. provides tips to improve our presentation skills. Each participant will have an opportunity to practice these techniques at the workshop and offer feedback to peers. The evening will conclude with a contest for best short speech. WIB-Pittsburgh Proudly Announces the Launch of Young Women In Bio-Pittsburgh!
Our inaugural event this spring will introduce local Girl Scouts to the lives and work of prominent females in STEM fields–past and present. Help us get YWIB-Pittsburgh off to a great start! Members and Guests Gab Over Cab at WIB-Pittsburgh’s First Event of the New Year
Nothing quite stimulates networking and great conversations like a glass of good wine! Exactly that, and more, occurred on January 16, 2014, at Pittsburgh Winery. New connections were made amongst over thirty women who attended: We circulated throughout the room, stopping at the small tables to share stories, snacks, and various reactions to the different wines being offered.

Seattle Metro Toasts the New Year!
On January 21, 2014, WIB-Seattle Metro held its first event of the year with “A Toast” to our great community of women in the life sciences! Hosted by the Washington Biotechnology & Biomedical Association, seventy-five of our members, past and new board leadership, and prospective members came to meet the new Board of Directors and network with other area professionals. Keynote speaker, Michelle Burris, Operations Consultant at OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals, recognized the power of women to spur business and economic growth around the world. She emphasized that the key to continued advancement of women, is teamwork, diversity across teams, leadership, and mentoring.
