|Volunteers needed for National Committees!
The National Mentors, Advisors, and Peers program is expanding, and we need volunteers to help on the committee. Volunteer roles will include: helping to expand MAPs or MAPs-University to more chapters, establishing a virtual MAPs program, and setting up a database of topics and articles to be used during MAPs meetings. You don’t need a current MAPs group affiliation to help! If you are interested in joining the MAPs committee, please send an email to the National MAPs Program Chair.
The Grants Procurement Committee needs volunteers to help us identify and/or apply for grants applicable to WIB. As our organization grows and expands its reach, we will become eligible for more grant opportunities – and we need your help! NewYorkBIO Executive Director Speaks at May Networking Event
On May 15, 2014, after an exhilarating week leading this year’s NYBIO-Con 2014 event, Executive Director Nathan Tinker greeted all who came to celebrate its success at our networking event. Tinker shared his biggest takeaways from this prestigious meeting, which attracts well over 800 attendees from across the life sciences spectrum. He emphasized that as part of the biotech/pharma New York Metro Area business community, we need to work with policy makers to identify effective strategies that create a more attractive environment for biotech/pharma start-ups, and for women to lead them.

Women In Bio-Metro New York plans to promote cardio fitness, have fun, AND network at NYC’s hottest workout center, SoulCycle. Details to follow shortly, so please stay tuned!

WIB-Pittsburgh’s Summer Book Review Rendezvous!
On July 9, 2014, local author Beth Caldwell will lead a discussion of her book, Inspired Entrepreneurs: A Collection of Female Triumphs in Business and Life, a collection of stories about women who felt trapped in their careers and used entrepreneurship to follow their passions and change the world. Read their stories, share their inspirations, and come prepared to discuss your dreams, purpose, and choices! Dinner is included in the cost of registration. Members are invited to bring a guest at the member cost.

WIB-San Francisco Bay Area Creates a MAPs Program
Our chapter offers a Mentors, Advisors and Peers (MAPs) program – a unique initiative available free of cost to members living in the Bay Area. During a MAPs meeting, six to ten women meet informally to discuss topics of common professional interest, or individuals are matched with mentors. This is a great opportunity to meet, connect, and learn from women with experience in the Biotech world! Discussion topics include career planning, transitioning careers, work/family balance, managing a team or department, leading or running a company, entrepreneurship, raising capital, and promoting women at work. WIB-Atlanta Book Club Discusses Biography of Maria Sibylla Merian
Join us on July 10, 2014, for the next WIB-Atlanta book club meeting! We will discuss Chrysalis: Maria Sibylla Merian and the Secrets of Metamorphosis, a biography of the extraordinary Eighteenth Century woman entomologist, botanist, and artist. Maria Sibylla Merian was an exemplar that showed other women that they could follow their dreams at a time when pursuing careers in science was forbidden for women. Her story brings perspective on how one can carve out a career during challenging times.

MAPs (Mentors, Advisors and Peers) Groups are informal meetings of six to ten women who share an interest in discussing topics of common professional interest. WIB-Atlanta is also bringing MAPs to local colleges and universities: MAPs-U Groups will be established in various campuses across Metro-Atlanta, serving the students and post-docs and helping them in their career decisions. WIB-Atlanta’s Fun Fall Events
Everyone enjoys a happy hour… so we will hold one at Eclipse di Luna this August! September will feature a “Dress for Success” workshop and suit drive. And that’s not all! We have been working with Georgia Bio to create the workshop “Paths to Success: Lean In Stories from Female Leaders in Bio.” This event will feature a number of prominent women from different career paths as they discuss their individual journeys. Look for more information on these high caliber events over the coming weeks!
WIB-Atlanta’s Spring Potluck - a Tasty Success!
Picture a neighborhood with huge oak trees and century-old homes, a cool breeze, yummy food, and great conversation on a big open porch! That was the setting for the Atlanta chapter’s June 1, 2014, event, when 20 WIB-Atlanta members and their guests met at the Midtown Atlanta home of Jamie Graham, our WIB-Atlanta chapter chair. By evening’s end, several participants had signed up to participate in our Mentors, Advisors, and Peers (MAPs) and MAPs-University programs. Our thanks to Jamie for hosting the lovely late-afternoon Sunday event!

Calling All Entrepreneurs and Visionaries - Life Sciences Needs You!
On June 12, 2014, WIB-Seattle Metro featured an exciting panel of area leaders who discussed what it takes in today’s life sciences sector to be an entrepreneur. Speakers included women with a wide range of organizational roles and backgrounds whose career paths had compelled them to leadership positions in new roles and young companies. They cited a willingness to take risks, surrounding oneself with the right team, and passion for their work as keys to success. Our speakers stressed the need for women to believe in themselves and to find both mentors and sponsors to help move their careers to the next level.

WIB-RTP Kicks Off Summer with Networking at UnVined
On June 2, 2014, a semi-structured networking event organized by WIB-RTP brought in over 50 participants to UnVined in Cary, North Carolina. The event’s structure encouraged attendees to move between different groups and increase their network connections. Icebreaker questions were provided at each table to help initiate a good conversation.
WIB-Southern California Golf Happy Hour!
We want our members to confidently utilize all available business tools to engage clients, bond with colleagues and managers, and conduct & close business transactions. In that spirit, we have arranged this event with High Heel Golfer (HHG), a company dedicated to “introducing, instructing, educating, and empowering upwardly mobile women to use golf for business” on July 15, 2014 Our event will be held at the beautiful Coronado Golf Course, and include a one hour long putting and full swing lesson from PGA instructors, golf clubs (if needed), a business and golf etiquette discussion, and networking time. Take advantage of this opportunity to be outdoors, active, social, and educated!

Fantastic Panel Addressed State of Precision Medicine
WIB-Chicago’s “Precision Medicine Strategies: Designing Individual-specific Care” event was held at 1871 on May 29, 2014. Our inspiring speakers led an interesting and dynamic conversation on the state of precision medicine. Attendees enjoyed networking in 1871’s innovative space and the delicious refreshments from Embeya.
