WIB-Atlanta Presents: Be Your Personal Best While Networking
Gracefully networking with others is no easy task. Many of us have faced challenges remembering names and keeping conversations running smoothly. Consider improving your networking performance on January 28, 2015, with a professional etiquette workshop with Peggy Newfield, founder and president of Personal Best, Inc. Ms. Newfield will give us important tips on how to initiate and end conversations gracefully, how to be engaging, and how to work a room. Many other topics will be covered, including ways to pass out your business cards while holding plates/glasses. Come out and achieve your personal best. You will make new contacts and leave feeling better prepared for managing future networking events.
WIB-Atlanta had a wonderful turnout for their lunchtime holiday potluck on December 7, 2014. Attendees enjoyed mimosas, good food, and great company. The potluck provided an excellent time to network with fellow members in a casual and relaxed setting. At the end of the gathering, there was a business card raffle in which eight gift cards were given out to party participants. WIB would like to thank Maggiano’s Little Italy, the High Museum of Art, and the Chattahoochee Nature Center for their donations. Thanks to WIB co-vice chair, Suzanne Shope, for hosting and to everyone who came out. Happy Holidays!
Paving the Way for Leadership of Women Scientists in Pakistan
On December 5, 2014, WIB-Atlanta Chapter chair, Jamie Graham, J.D., hosted a group of Pakistani women scientists at the Kilpatrick Townsend and Stockton, LLP, offices in Atlanta. This group, “Women in Agriculture: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders,” were on a tour of the United States and had requested a meeting with WIB-Atlanta while they were in Georgia. The distinguished group of Pakistani delegates had an engaging conversation with Jamie, discussing the need to encourage and develop women leaders in Pakistan’s life sciences, and using the WIB website as a guide to exemplary structure, programs, and events. The Women in Agriculture group will reach out to WIB-National for advice on how to establish a strong national women’s science leadership organization in Pakistan.

A long-awaited journey is nearing an end for Cohera Medical, Inc. In August of 2014, this Pittsburgh-based company received a favorable vote from a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee for TissuGlu® Surgical Adhesive. Cohera’s story began at the University of Pittsburgh, where Eric Beckman and Michael Buckley invented a prototype tissue adhesive. Through the university’s Office of Technology Management, seed money was raised and Cohera was formed in 2006. With the potential FDA approval of TissuGlu, Cohera’s journey serves as real encouragement for the many start-up companies in the Pittsburgh area. Stephanie Kladakis, an active WIB member, is VP of Research and Development at Cohera. When speaking about the FDA approval process, Stephanie says that patience is a necessary commodity, but it is worth the wait.

Steve walked participants through the Wheel of Life a tool helps determine satisfaction in various life domains. The Wheel of Life considers career as one aspect of a holistic life and reminds us that it is important to find balance in life. This topic really struck a chord with attendees who were engaged, asked great questions and shared feedback with the group. The evening was capped off with snacks and small group networking.
